Community Anchor Introduces Iconic Contemporary Design

Situated within the reimagined Donelson Plaza, the new Donelson Library establishes a vibrant public edge and gathering space for one of Nashville’s most storied neighborhoods. EDGE collaborated with the project team to shape an exterior environment that reflects the building’s midcentury architectural character while enhancing circulation, comfort, and safety for all visitors.

The landscape design responds directly to the site’s grade change, organizing safe and intuitive pedestrian access around the elevated main entrance. Bollards, sidewalk alignments, and structured plantings define clear pathways, while native trees and foundation beds soften building edges and create seasonal interest throughout the year. A half-acre lawn at the building’s entrance provides space for reading, neighborhood programming, and public art, reinforcing the library’s role as a central hub in the community.
