The Greater Dayton School Playground and Track

Greater Dayton School

Dayton, OH

The Greater Dayton School was founded to expand access to a stronger educational future for under-resourced students in Dayton. As Ohio’s first secular private school, it pairs personalized instruction and comprehensive student support within a campus designed to foster growth, stability, and opportunity. EDGE led the site design process, organizing the campus to extend the school’s mission through spaces that support students from the moment they arrive.

Circulation is organized through a clear one-way loop that separates parking from drop-off and pick-up, reducing congestion at the busiest points of the day. A central plaza, defined by unique paving patterns, establishes a safe and legible transition between vehicles and pedestrians while linking the building to surrounding outdoor spaces.

Treated as part of the curriculum, the site creates consistent opportunities for students to engage with the landscape throughout the day. Classrooms, recreation areas, and outdoor learning environments are directly connected, supporting visibility across the campus and reinforcing daily movement patterns.

The playground is designed around universal access and active play, allowing students of different ages and abilities to use the space together with confidence. Play elements, an integrated track and field, and a basketball court define a dedicated setting for recreation within the campus. These spaces support physical development and encourage shared activity, helping students strengthen social connections through movement and teamwork.

Together, the site and outdoor environments reinforce the school’s mission through daily use. The landscape becomes an active part of the educational experience, supporting movement, interaction, and opportunity across the campus.
