Downtown Redevelopment Revitalizes Historic Town Square
The Xenia Market District is a $140 million redevelopment of the former Xenia Towne Square. It reimagines a 1970s-era shopping center as a walkable, mixed-use district that reconnects the community to its historic downtown core.
Recognizing the opportunity to revitalize this central site, the city and developers led a planning and engagement process to shape a vision rooted in the community’s history while supporting its future growth. Through public meetings, workshops, and open forums, residents identified priorities for a downtown that brings people together, supports small businesses, and provides spaces for gathering and celebration. Their input informed key design decisions, from restoring walkable blocks and small-scale streets to creating public amenities that reflect Xenia’s identity.
At the heart of the district, a large open lawn anchored by a performance stage functions as both an everyday park and a flexible event space for concerts, festivals, and civic gatherings. Surrounding it, a network of pedestrian-scaled streets and outdoor dining areas reinforces a walkable downtown environment. Tree-lined promenades, integrated seating, and public art establish a cohesive public realm, while lighting and safety features enhance comfort and accessibility for all ages.
This investment positions the Market District as both a community hub and a catalyst for reinvestment in Xenia’s historic core. Flexible public spaces support everyday use as well as large-scale events, bringing consistent foot traffic to local businesses. A strengthened public realm expands opportunities for residents and visitors while preparing the site for future private investment. Together, these elements re-establish downtown as the civic and cultural heart of the city and lay the foundation for long-term vitality.
