Boardwalk Revitalization Offers Immersive Experience for Lake Erie Visitors

Beloved Destination for Tourists & Birdwatchers

Maumee Bay State Park’s boardwalk is a well-known attraction, drawing birdwatchers from across the country to observe diverse wetland habitats. Spanning two miles, the aging wooden structure has provided access to these ecologically rich areas for over 30 years. However, exposure to the elements has taken its toll, requiring a thoughtful redesign to ensure long-term durability and accessibility.

A Careful Approach to Restoration

EDGE collaborated with the design team and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to develop a master plan that balances preservation and enhancement. Key project goals included minimizing disturbance to wetlands and endangered species habitats, creating a cost-effective and resilient structure, and expanding the boardwalk’s footprint to allow for interactive learning experiences. New amenities such as wayfinding elements, shaded rest areas, and safety features further improve the visitor experience.

Offering a New Perspective on the Landscape

A focal point of the project is the replacement of the observation deck. EDGE explored multiple design concepts before selecting an innovative structure inspired by a bird’s nest. The new deck raises the viewing platform by five feet, offering an immersive 360-degree perspective of Lake Erie and the surrounding wetlands. By integrating educational opportunities with a more engaging and accessible boardwalk, the revitalization ensures that Maumee Bay remains a premier destination for nature enthusiasts.
